In the beginning is the boat. Without a boat, everything is theory and vision. As soon as the boat is there, everything becomes concrete. The vision becomes a plan, out of the 100 possibilities of how and where to start the project, one is chosen. And the realisation begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I, Martin, have been looking for boats for years. Actually, ever since I sold my last boat. Back then it was a classic sailing boat with one hull, a Bavaria 45, which sailed well and was comfortable. Nevertheless, this time I wanted a multihull. A catamaran may not sail as well, but it offers much more space and is more comfortable. It's a bit like driving a car or motorbike. On a motorbike, I lean into the bend and go with the flow. In a car, nothing leans into the bend, but I have space and stay warm and dry. After sailing a number of catamarans in the affordable charter classes, mainly Lagoons or Balis, I was increasingly disappointed. The catamarans sail terribly downwind, i.e. you can't go upwind. They are often heavy and need a lot of wind to get going at all. If you want to sail downwind, you have problems again; in fact, you can only sail really well with half the wind. We therefore found it difficult to make a decision. Everything felt like a compromise and at a price that really made me feel queasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then I found the Neel. I'd only seen her sailing once in the Caribbean, where I was straining to keep up with her on my charter catamaran - even though she was reefed and I was sailing under full sail. When I found her in adverts, I was immediately impressed. She seemed to combine everything: Speed, height running and a comfortable living space on one level. We don't need four cabins with four bathrooms - we want shared space for socialising with friends or just a comfortable space for two. When I came across an advert that was suddenly in a price range that we could afford, the decision was suddenly made very quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We actually bought the boat blind, or at least paid a deposit. In December, we went to have it tested and inspected by a professional valuer. I was so excited that I couldn't think straight. I was more than happy to have the professional with me. And then we suddenly had a boat! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what a boat! A Neel 43, a trimaran. She is still called Kefalonia and is from an insolvent charter company, but she will be our home for a long time, will take us across oceans, will bring us to people, islands and the wonders of nature! She will be a space for us, for our friends, for students, for people we will get to know, with whom we will talk, dance, cook and dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We love the boat. We crawl into every corner, try to understand everything and are super excited. We take the first test drive and can't believe it. We have almost no wind, only 5 knots of true wind and our sea trial skipper switches off the engine. We set sail and with 5 knots of true wind, we are travelling through the water at almost 5 knots. For anyone who thinks this is all sailing lingo: that's really fast! A Lagoon catamaran or even the Bavaria 45 would hardly have moved in this wind. The Neel starts like a small dinghy and sets off in almost no wind. Insane!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the night, the universe wants to show us once again what we are getting into. The mistral whistles out of the mountains with gusts of gale force (>60 kn = 110 km\/h). In our harbour it is \"only\" 50 knots and we practically don't sleep a wink. The harbour master warns us that we are unlikely to make it through the night without damage and we set additional mooring lines and fenders. The boat tugs at the lines all night, it crashes and rumbles, the wind whistles. We are glad that we are in the harbour, even though the concrete pier is getting damn close. The next morning we are completely exhausted but our confidence is unbroken. Nights like this are part of it. The good thing is that you often forget them afterwards :-).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, we are over the moon with our boat. Now we can get started! There are 1000 things to do, on the boat, in the whole preparation. But we now know how it starts and where it starts!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
