Regenwald von Tobago &#8211; Main Ridge Forest Reserve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es ist handelt sich um das \u00e4lteste Naturreservat der Welt und ist bereits im Jahre 1776, kurz nach \u00dcbernahme durch die britischen Besatzer, vom Parlament unter Schutz gestellt worden. Der Grund f\u00fcr die Unterschutzstellung war, dass man erkannt hat, dass die S\u00fc\u00dfwasser-Reserven der Insel von der Gr\u00f6\u00dfe der Bewaldung abhingen. Und dieses Wasser war f\u00fcr die Briten n\u00f6tig, um die vielen Wasserm\u00fchlen zu bedienen, die f\u00fcr die Zuckerrohrproduktion n\u00f6tig waren. Ein Gro\u00dfteil des Waldes ist v\u00f6llig sich selbst \u00fcberlassen, wobei Hurrikans in den Jahren 1790, 1847, 1963 und 1974 jeweils schwere Sch\u00e4den verursacht haben. In bewundernswerter Art und Weise kann nachvollzogen werden, wie die Natur mit der Zeit diese Sch\u00e4den reguliert hat. Der bergige Wald erreicht eine maximale H\u00f6he von 580 Metern.
